Even though Thomas Edison is usually referred to as the man who invented the light bulb,the famous American inventor was not the only one who contributed to the development of this revolutionary technology.

Before him, there were people like Alessandro Volta, Humphrey Davy and Joseph Swan who played a critical role in the development of this technology.
Apart from all others Lewis Howard Latimer is considered one of the most Black Inventors of all time. He is an African American entrepreneur, philanthropist.>br>
What you need to know is that Latimer did not invent light bulb ,rather he invented modern carbon filaments which made the light bulb more practical and affordable.
Who is Lewis Howard Latimer?

Lewis Latimer, was one of the first major African American inventors. Lewis Latimer was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on September 4,1848.Along with Granville T Woods. He was the son of his parents (George Latimer and Rebecca Latimer)

Both of his parents run away slaves and migrated to Messachusetts in 1842 from Virginia. His father (George Latimer) was captured by his slave owner,who was determined to take him back to Virginia.
What you don’t know?

At first, Latimer worked as an assistant to Alexander Graham Bell, drawing the blueprints for Bell’s patent for the telephone in 1876.After observing Latimer’s ability to sketch patent drawings, he was eventually promoted to the position of head draftsman earning 20$ a week.

Around 1880,Lewis Latimer joined the U.S Electric Lighting Company. That was the time Thomas Edison patent his light bulb which used a carbonized bamboo filament that burnt out rather quickly.
Here Latimer was hired as the assistant manager and draftsman for US Electric Lighting Company. This company was owned by Hiram Maxim who played as Thomas Edison’s chief.

By that time, Thomas Edison invented the light bulb composed of a glass bulb which surrounded a carbon wire filament made from bamboo and paper. Eventually, this duration Latimer created a way to make the carbon filament more durable by encasing it in cardboard. His invention made incandescent lighting practical and affordable and was also longer lasting than earlier filaments.

Later on Latimer wrote the world’s most thorough book on electric lighting known as INCANDESCENT ELECTRIC LIGHTING: A practical description of Edison System.

In 1918,Latimer become a member of Edison’s elite research team, ”Edison’s Pioneers” and made his important scientific contributions here by improving Edison’s light bulb.
Other inventions done by Lewis Latimer included an evaporative air conditioner, an improved process for manufacturing carbon filaments for light bulbs and an improved toilet system for railroads cars.
